Climate change vulnerability and smallholder farmers’ adaptive responses in the semi-arid Far North Region of Cameroon

Abstract Climate change and variability contribute to exacerbating poverty social unrest in poor countries. Therefore, it becomes important assess vulnerability adaptation measures raise awareness monitoring of climate policy for better decision-making. This research examines how farmers perceive their they respond the semi-arid Far North Region Cameroon. Using both quantitative qualitative approaches, data on perceptions with regards responses related hazards were collected based expert opinions, individual farmers’ interviews, focus group discussion. The triangulated direct observations field. results reveal that are mostly concerned about drought decrease rainfall. Thus, have mainly implemented behavioral locally-made options such as short-cycle varieties, terrace farming, half-moon, bunds, among others, overcome water shortages. Nevertheless, these not solely driven by vulnerability; socioeconomic context might play a role. Moreover, limited capacity adapt change, which suggests government policy-makers should focus, only implementing planned strategies, but also improvement promotion autonomous strategies.
